4FirHealth

Firefighting occupational exposure and early effects on the health of operational forces

Description

4FirHealth evaluated the occupational exposure of firefighters to health-relevant pollutants, gas and (coarse, fine, and ultrafine) particulate matter, and its composition in metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at fire stations and during (forest/structure) firefighting activities. The project estimated early biological changes (e.g., urine) related to the active participation in (forest/structure) firefighting activities (pre-fire, and immediately and next morning post-fire). 4FirHealth presented a list of preventive measures, recommendations, and good practices, in collaboration with firefighting operational forces, to promote the health and safety of firefighters (https://prociv.gov.pt/pt/bombeiros/corpos-de-bombeiros/saude/).
