Children are particularly vulnerable to environmental hazards. The ATHLETE project will measure a wide range of environmental exposures (urban, chemical, lifestyle and social risk factors) during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence. The project will then link this “early-life exposome” to children’s biological responses and cardiometabolic, respiratory, and mental health. The results will help us to better understand and prevent health damage from environmental agents from the earliest parts of the life course onward.

The HELIX cohort represents a collaborative study across six established and ongoing longitudinal population-based birth cohort studies in six European countries (France, Greece, Lithuania, Norway, Spain, and the United Kingdom).
HELIX collected data from 1,663 mother-child pairs recruited during pregnancy. Data was retroactively collected and harmonized for the pregnancy period, and biomarkers, omics signatures and child health outcomes were measured at ages 6-11 years.
A second follow-up visit was conducted at ages 12-18 years with 864 adolescents participating where biomarkers, omics signatures and health outcomes were again collected.
